"Nashik" came out from the word "Nashika" which means nose (naak). This was given by 'Peshwas' when they got control over the city in 1818. In 1860 when the British were ruling Nashik became a separate district.
Before the Ramayana period, Nashik was known as Panchvati. It is very mythological, social, and cultural importance for Hindus as Lord Ram lived in Panchvati (Nashik) at the time of Canvas (exile). Maharishi Agasti also did his Tapasya in Nashik. In Hindu epic Ramayana lord Ram, the king of Ayodhya went to exile for 14 years and when they are living in Panchvati, Shoorpnakha sister of demon king Ravan came to seduce Ram but Ram was not distracted towards her and ordered brother Laxman to cut off Shoorpanakha's nose (nashika). Because of that incident, Panchvati was named as Nashik. It hosts one of the massive Kumbh Mela every twelve years. Nashik is also famous for Trimbakeshwar one of the twelve jyotirlingas (temple of lord shiva) it was built by Shri Peshwa Nanasaheb and Godavari river also originates from Trimbakeshwar in Trimbak, Nashik.
